Can You Do What This Imam Did?
“They say: We hear and obey, our Lord! Thy forgiveness {do we
crave}, and to Thee is the eventual course.”—Surah Al-Baqara Q2:285
A hajj pilgrim came to Medina and
went to sleep in the Prophet’s Mosque. When he awoke he became suspicious that
his bag containing one thousand dinars has been stolen by a thief.
He looked here and there but could
not find anyone. At the time, Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq {R} was praying in a corner.
This man did not recognize him. He insisted that the Imam had stolen his money.
When the Imam asked him of the
amount, the man replied that the bag contained one thousand gold coins. Hearing
this, the Imam came out of the Prophet’s Mosque to his residence and gave one
thousand gold coins to this man.
He quickly took them and returned to
his place, but surprisingly, he found his bag lying there. At once, he went back to the Imam to
seek forgiveness and to return those gold coins.
The Imam said:
“We have given what we
gave and we would not take it back.”
The man was flabbergasted at the
high morals and forgiveness of the Imam.
He asked someone who that gentleman
was. He was told that it is Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq {R}.
Knowing this, he threw himself at
the Imam’s feet and pleaded:
“O son of the Messenger! Forgive my fault. I
was in debt and this was the amount I was to repay to my creditor. That is why
the imagination of its loss perturbed me.”
The Imam {R} said, celestially: “Go, I have forgiven you.”
Considering this not as a tale but
as a real life event in which I see myself in the position of the Imam, being
wrongly accused of theft. Yet ignoring the emotional pains of
such false accusation, still went ahead to benefit my accuser with my own hard
earned money.
So, I asked myself, “Can I really do what this Imam did?”
And now I am asking you with all
humility, "Can you do the same?" Or better put, "Will you
do the same?"
May AllahSWT bless us with patience.
Aameen
