Fulfill Your Promise, No Matter What

“There is no religious commitment for the one who does not keep his promise.”—Ahmad

After the battle of Naharwan, the troops of Amir’ul-Muminin {R} took Shimr as captive.

One day Imam Husayn {R} passed by the prison and Shimr said:

“O son of Allah’s Messenger! Take pity on me and request your father to release me. I cannot bear the hardships of this captivity anymore.”

The Imam at once came to Ali {R} and began to petition him for the release of Shimr.

Amir’ul-Muminin {R} became very angry and said:

“Son, you don’t know who that fellow is. He is your killer.

One day, he would slaughter you in a condition of three days’ hunger and thirst.”

Fulfill Your Promise, No Matter What

Imam Husayn {R} said:

All this is correct, but I have promised him.

Do not let me be embarrassed before him.”

Hearing this, Amir’ul-Muminin {R} ordered his release.

Al-Husayn {R} went the extra-mile to keep his word, despite the fact that Shimr would later take his life; which he did exactly as prophesied. Subhanallah!

Now how far will you and I go to keeping our word?

May AllahSWT grant us understanding. Aameen.
