The Truly Wise Fear the Burden of Debts



“Martyrdom for Allah’s sake atones for all sins except indebtedness.”—Muslim



Usaamah Ibn Zaid {R} was one of the illustrious companions of the Holy Prophet {SAW}. 

Once, he fell ill and so Al-Husain{R} paid him a visit. Approaching him, Al-Husain {R} observed Usaamah Ibn Zaid {R} to be greatly disturbed, repeatedly moaning and exhibiting great anguish.

Al-Husain {R} said to him: “Brother, what causes you to be so disturbed and worried?”

“I am burdened by a debt of sixty thousand dinars.” he replied.

The grandson of the Holy Prophet {SAW} consoled him by saying, “I take the responsibility of clearing your debt.”

Usaamah {R} persisted, “I fear I may die before my debt is repaid.”

Al-Husain {R} said, “Do not worry! I shall clear your debt before your death.”

Having said this, he ordered his debt to be paid off immediately.

Clearly, Usaamah {R} deeply understood the above hadith which says that even the great virtue of martyrdom is not sufficient to repeal the consequences of indebtedness in the Hereafter. Wow!

May Allah {SWT} help us clear all our debts before the angel of death beckons on us. Aameen.
