Prophet Ilyas: One of the Prophets from Allah (SWT)

“(It is) a Book We have revealed to you abounding in good that they you may ponder over its verses and that those endowed with understanding may be mindful.”_Quran 38:29

Ilyas (Elisha) is one of the Prophets of Allah SWT.

It was written that he was the cousin of Elijah.

He was said to have hidden with Elijah in a cave in Mount Qasium to escape from the King of Ba’alabak. And when Elijah died, Ilyas succeeded him as a prophet among his people.

According to Al-Hafiz Abu Al-Qasim Ibn Asaker, Elisha was the son of Adi, the son of Shultam, the son of Aphraem, the son of Joseph, the son of Isaac, and the son of Abraham.

Allah revealed his story to our dear Prophet Muhammad in the Quran, chapter 38 verses 45-48 as follows:

“And remember Our slaves , Abraham, Ishaaq, and Yaqoub, (all) owners of strength (in worshipping Us) and (also) of religious understanding.

Verily, We did choose them by granting them (a good thing) the remembrance of the home (in the Hereafter and they used to make people remember it.

And also they used to invite the people to obey Allah and to do good deeds for the Hereafter). And they are in Our Sight, verily, of the chosen and the best!

And remember Ishamael, Elisha and Dhul-Kifl, all are among the best.”

Ibn Ishaaq confirmed that Ilyas (pbuh) was sent to the children of Israel after Elijah (pbuh).

He lived among his people, calling them to Allah and abiding by the message and laws of Elijah until he passed away.

Note:

The one key lesson I want to emphasize in this short article is this: the virtue of believing in and remembering of the Last Day, individually and collectively.

As Muslims we must believe in and remember the reality of Day of Judgement, which will be 50,000 years long.

And by our frequent remembrance of that Dreadful Day, we are more likely to make better choices throughout our lives since we know we shall be called to render an account of how we lived on earth when we die.

Allah says in Quran 3 verse 185:

“Every soul will taste death. You will be paid your wages in full on the Day of Rising.

Anyone who is distanced from the Fire and admitted to the Garden has triumphed.

The life of this world is only the enjoyment of delusion.”

May Allah SWT count us among the lucky ones who will merit His Mercy on the Day of Rising.
Allahuma  Aameen.
