Befriend the Book of Allah: Al-Quran
“I have not seen anything which feeds the
intellect and soul, protects the body and guarrantees happiness more than the
constant looking at the book of Allah, The Exalted.”
Ibn Taymmiyah (RA)
To befriend the Quran is sign for the love of
Allah in the heart as the great scholar, ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyya (RA) once said:
“If you wish to check how much you love Allah,
then see how much your heart loves the Quran, and you will know the answer.”
On the virtue of befriending the Quran, a good
model to follow is an illustrious companion of the Prophet (SAW) by the name of
Abdullah ibn Masood (RA).
Abdullah received a unique training in the
household of the Prophet (SAW) and he adopted and followed every manner of the
Prophet (SAW) until it was said of him:
"He was the closest to the Prophet (SAW) in
character."
Abdullah was taught in the school of the Prophet and
was one of the best reciters of the Quran among all the companions of the
Prophet (SAW).
The following anecdote will sufficiently prove
the special closeness of Abdullah ibn Mas’ood (RA) to the book of Allah as the
evidence came from the Prophet (SAW), himself.
Umar ibn Al-Kattab (RA) narrates as follows:
One night, the Messenger of Allah (SAW) was
having a conversation with Abu Bakr (RA) about the situation of Muslims.
During that night, the Prophet (SAW) passed
through the mosque and there was a man standing in prayer whom we did not
recognize at first.
The Prophet (SAW) stood and listened to him, then
turned to us and said:
"Whoever wants to read the Quran as fresh as
when it was revealed, then let him read according to the recitation of Ibn Umm
Abd (the nickname of Abdullah ibn Mas’ood (RA)."
What a great honour!
Eventually, Abdullah ibn Mas’ood (RA) attained
such degree of Quranic knowledge that he would say:
"By Him besides Whom, there is no god, no
verse of the book of God has been revealed without my knowing where it was
revealed and the circumstances of its revelation.”
In demonstration of his unquenchable willingness
to learn, he would also add:
“By God, if I know there was anyone who knew more
of the Book of Allah, I will do whatever is in my power to be with him."
I hope we can—at least—be inspired by him to get a
bit closer to the book of Allah, the Most High.
